Personal Background: Brandon Woelfel is a photographer based out of New York. He was inspired by photographers that he followed on Instagram and decided to do the same thing. He attended the School of Visual Arts. He has been doing photography for five years now and has partnered with many famous companies such as Aeropostale, Bose, Apple, Buzzfeed, Macy's and many more. He likes to travel with his models to have interesting settings in his photos.
Style: In Brandon's photos, he uses a lot of similar objects and colors. For example, he has continuously used string fairy lights in his photos to create a cool lighting effects like little light blurbs. His photography is specifically portrait photography of his friends and clients. Another thing that carries throughout his work is light pinks and cyan blues. He seems to draw out these colors when he edits them in his photos. Rarely ever is there a photo with a warm temperature on his page, he likes to make them all cool. He likes to use very magical objects in his photographs that can enhance the lighting effects such as CD's, glasses, bubbles, umbrellas, smoke and many other fun trinkets.
Philosophy: Brandon Woelfel doesn't create photographs with a specific message, but rather believes in the viewer finding their own meaning. He likes to make his photos look candid and showcase happiness in upbeat photos. He never expresses sadness or anger in his photography because he is rather a very happy person. He creates a world through his photography, a very bright happy world. Some of his photos like to show us how magical the world can be, giving people a sense of hope through his photography.
Influences: When I re-created his photos, I found myself having the same fun that he claims to have in his photoshoots. I really tried to show his cool lighting and pinks and blues when I work. I was able to obtain some of his props that he uses in his photos because I really feel like they add an element of magic to the photos. I bought the lights off of amazon because I wanted them for my photography because I love the element of magic that they add to photos. He has also inspired many young artists because his photos are so eye catching and unique. He inspires me to obtain my own consistent style in photography. Brandon was influenced by the Instagram models that he follows.
Compare and Contrast: I think that I chose pretty challenging photos to re-create and I am really satisfied with how they turned out. I got all of the correct props that he had used in his photos. I bought the lights off of amazon because I thought they would look nice in my room and I was able to use those in my photos. A while ago I was digging through some bins in my pantry and came across this really unique colored lightbulb and I instantly recognized it from his photos so I decided to re-create one that used the lightbulb. I also live right next to a flower shop and was able to quickly snag some light pink roses. Some things that I think could have been more precise include my viewpoint from my friend, Ava, with the lightbulb and the size of the flower that I used had too small of petals. I think that I was able to get really close with the lighting, viewpoint and colors.
Personal Artist Statement: These photos, were absolutely awesome and fun to take. All of the photos led to me just playing around afterwards and trying to get some of my own images of my friends. I thought it was a really good time trying to re- create the photos. The rose one was definitely the most difficult. I was standing over my friend, Lana, while holding a camera in one hand and a mirror in the other (so she could see what the model looked like and re-create the facial expression) while my sister kneeled on the bed and dropped flowers onto Lana's face. The ones with the lights were easier to re- create but two things I found difficult was the posture and the angle of her face. When I was editing the photos, I made them very cool, brought out whites, blacks, blues and pinks. Overall, I really like how all of these photos turned out and I had a lot of fun while re-creating his photos.
